There are a lot of elective choices at Lamar, from the fine arts to athletics, but one of the most useful, in my opinion, is Yearbook.
Why? Well, let's start with the real world experience you get from the class. All the skills you pick up as a Yearbook student can be used outside of school immediately. Not only will you learn to become a more proficient writer, but you will learn layout and publishing software, journalism and interpersonal skills, and gain a strong sense of personal achievement. All of these can be used in a variety of jobs, and will improve your academic position, as well.
What kinds of things do we do in Yearbook? Well, for the first year students, we learn all the basic essentials for creating a weekly digital newspaper, including layout, photography, interviewing, and essential computer writing skills. Students form their own newsroom, with editors, writers, and photographers. They work together to put out a weekly document with all the latest news from the school and community.
Students in the second year use their new skills to complete the Lamar Longhorn, the school yearbook, a professionally printed tome that is sold and seen by everyone in the school. They are the best of the best, and pick up skills that will give them an edge in High School, and get them noticed when they apply to a college.
But beyond all of that, we have a lot of fun, and the team environment builds working relationships that will last for years.
So. do you have what it takes to be a Yearbook student?
